As a “Membre associé du Bocuse d’Or”, Villeroy & Boch has been the official competition plate for years now, this time being no exception.

This year V&B pulls from their wildly successful Artesano collection. The décor is traditionally created by Alain Vavro, a world renowned French artist who works with his wife Dominique in Collogne-au-Mont-d’Or, just north of Lyon.

Vavro has been designing the patterns on the plates since 1995 with Monsieur Paul always approving them personally.

This year, the themes surrounding the decoration of the plates are “sustainability” and “responsibility for nature’s products.”

Alain Vavro explains, “Nowadays consumers want to know where their products come from. We have put the spotlight on products mother nature has given to us.”

The Varro couple created the design with warm pastel colors, depicting a chef in the middle of the plate as an orchestra leader of sorts, conducting the ingredients into culinary creations. This marks a change from the victory pose traditionally used.

Donning Varro’s trademark illustration the plate also has a lemon with a shape similar to the oval Artesano plate by Villeroy & Boch, accompanied by a variety of vegetables, cutlery, and a fish.

Inscribed at the top of the plate is “Bocuse d’Or 2017” in gold and at the bottom, “30 ans” which is in reference to the anniversary year of the culinary contest, adding the final touch to the motif on the collector’s plate.

You can get your own Bocuse d’Or 2017 Villeroy & Boch competition plate designed by Alain and Dominique Varro by becoming one of the world’s best chefs and winning the competition… or you can check out Villeroy & Boch’s Artesano line, which is just as cool in our opinion!
