Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: “High alumina body, chip resistant, great for both front and back of the house.”

These are buzzwords. They aren’t offensive or cliche. They actually mean something in foodservice and hospitality. They are an immediate indicator that what you are about to get is a quality product that can withstand the harshest of conditions you put it through.

But the minute those buzzwords kick in, you can feel the glaze leap off the china and onto your eyes.

Jouw… and their approach to tabletop, however, deviate from the go-to buzzwords your local supplier might throw at you.

One look at some of their products and you don’t know whether to eat from it or get a tetanus shot. If we had to pick buzzwords for them “Swinging Car Dish” & “Machine Gun Spoon” would be a good starting place.

Cut from that fringe gastronomy cloth (think Grant Achatz and Alinea) Jouw aims to create pieces that break free from the rules of usability. They very openly want to challenge diners to reconsider any preconceived notions they may have about the relationship between tableware and it’s user.

The result? You get some extremely interesting dinnerware (art?) you’re not going to find at your local Chili’s any time soon.

Jouw… is a sort of initiative started by Jouw Wijnsma and Martin Kullik, names that might sound familiar if you’re hip to Steinbeisser – the food side of all this. Again, the goal here is a full force effort to challenge the way we experience tabletop. Each design is one of a kind with a specific purpose and The Jouw… initiative finds designers all over to contribute to that effort.

Is it practical? Of course not. But that’s kind of the point.

We preach that #TabletopMatters here at TabletopJournal and this is one of those classic examples of brilliant minds coming together to do something different with a direct intention of altering your tabletop experience.

It’s a little abstract and perhaps not for everyone, but we love it and can’t wait to see more!
