Glassware is not the easier product to differentiate, but here’s a company – Roberts Wineware –  that has a unique and interesting “twist” on enhancing the wine drinking experience. By adding textural elements near the rim of the glasses, Roberts’ stemware incorporates lessons learned about glass shape with an understanding of the body’s taste mechanism. Roberts claims that studies show that saliva is needed to process and register flavor, which is hard to disagree with. The texture they have near the rim of the stemware excites neural receptors in the tongue and lips, driving salivary secretions. The result: an awakening of the palate for enhanced taste awareness.

Bottom line…..the wine tastes better. And, if that is true – isn’t that what its all about?
Texture brings the critical element of touch into the wine-drinking experience. Unlike traditional glassware that concentrates on the grape and the shape, the Roberts Supertaster Series focuses on heightening the perception--and pleasure--of the wine consumer through the sense of touch.

Ok…there’s a bit more to it that simply adding texture near the rim. Roberts Wineware also has well porportioned bowl sizes for each wine type and they spend a great deal of attention the stems  believing them to be an intregal part of the wine tasting experience. And, since besides the lips touching the rim…it’s the only other place a drinker comes in contact with the glass. So, we agree with Roberts Wineware that well made stems are also part of the wine drinking experience.
Long live the Stem.
