Recruiting: What Makes a ‘GOOD’ Bartender?

Finding an all around good bartender in the hospitality industry could be the industry’s equivalent to striking gold. The bartender position is an essential part of composing a well-oiled front-of-the-house staff. An ordinary bartender’s responsibility can range from crafting drink specials, ordering cocktail ingredients, to making each and every drink order for customers. But the good bartender is also a great salesperson, an honest judge of character, and a hardworking, creative employee who doesn’t mind lending the occasional ear to a customer when time allows for it.

Keep in mind that when recruiting a bartender, it is important to make sure you aren’t mistaking a friendly face and a bubbly personality for an unenthusiastic character who is unwilling to fulfill the (good) bartender’s responsibilities of going above and beyond. Take into account the opinions of the rest of your staff to see how enthusiastic they are working with the new drink-slinging hire and keep an eye on inventory, and you and your establishment should be in good shape moving forward.
