At the recent Host Milano show, RAK Porcelain continued its impressive line of new product introductions….except this time it was 8 new stainless steel cutlery designs that were unveiled instead of its dinnerware introductions that caught the most attention.

With designs ranging from Classic to Modern to Avant Garde, the new RAK cutlery has created a natural addition to it’s hotelware porcelain. Using the same characteristics that have contributed to the success of its dinnerware, RAK‘s new cutlery combines optimal quality and functionality….using the finest 18-10 stainless steel and ergonomic designs that are 3 to 4mm thick. The intial cutlery designs have been created to be complementary to RAK‘s existing dinnerware designs.

The creative hand of Hamburg-based designer Mikaela Dörfel and her team is behind RAK‘s new cutlery collection and its innovative design. Designer Dörfel, who was born in Finland, gets her inspiration from various sources such as architecture or nature. Dörfel does her original sketches in 2D then her team turns them into 3D. According to Dörfel, “The change in volume allows us to observe how it works ergonomically and we see the harmony of the shape. It’s exciting.” ***Note: The above interview with designer Dörfel was done at Host Milano tradeshow, so you may want to turn your volume up to make sure you are able to hear her properly According to Mikaela Dörfel, the design process is a journey. In the beginning, there is a specific brief looking for a unique idea. Various inspirations for that idea can be found in nature, traditional crafts or even modern architecture.
Following the brief and inspiration, the initial ideas are then developed into design concepts:

“We then play for example with clear geometrical shapes, juxtaposition of symmetry and asymmetry, grids and patterns – always being aware of function, range compatibility and end production,” says Dörfel.

Mikaela Dörfel believes that it’s in the detail that the design quality is really expressed. Therefore, she and her design team check thoroughly the shapes with models and prototypes and produce very detailed 2D and 3D drawings, so that nothing is left to chance.

At the Host Milano show, the majority of all the products on display in the RAK Porcelain stand were all new or at leaast very recent introductions. However, none of these new products may ultimately be more impactful to the guest dining experience than these new cutlery designs.
