At TabletopJournal, we try to highlight and celebrate risk takers, particularly when it comes to creative and innovative designs for hospitality tabletop products. One company that we think continues to get the cool design thing is Kahla Porcelain. And, it’s nice to see that others agree with us.

Just announced…. Kahla’s CENTURIES design concept was selected to receive the 2012 red dot product design award. With this award, the jury of 30 international experts recognizes the conceptual sophistication of CENTURIES and its wide variety of possible combinations. The award is also to be seen as a recognition of the shift towards a more individualized table culture, a move made by Kahla already in the 1990s and taken one step further by acclaimed designer Barbara Schmidt with her latest design. Because this series is not your traditional porcelain set but it rather is a group of beautiful individual objects linked by its material and the underlying design language. These objects can be combined as desired and re-arranged into countless new personalized compositions. “I am very excited about the red dot, in particular because the award shows that the creative play with historical influences may have its place in contemporary design” says Barbara Schmidt.

The CENTURIES design represents a bridge between past and present, between reason and emotion. In CENTURIES, clear contemporary design meets an enormous wealth of historical detail and heritage of design. The four different design lines Thuringia, Mirasol, Feston and Époque quote ribbed reliefs and textures from nature, scalloped edges and different types of historical handles. With such a variety of options, CENTURIES is hardly like any other tradition dinnerware design. The different shapes of the individual plates, cups and hollowware vessels enrich will visually differentiate the guest dining experience, while at the same time, delighting with their elegant lines and the experience of touching the finely crafted, textured surface.

The red dot award ceremony will take place on July 2nd, 2012 at the Aalto Theatre in Essen as in previous years. 1,800 manufacturers and designers from 58 countries with over 4,500 products competed for the 2012 awards.

On March 12th, Kahla’s CENTURIES received the Top Hotel Star Award in Gold in the Design category at the Internorga (International Trade Fair for Catering and Food Services Industry) in Hamburg. The readers of the trade journal Top Hotel selected the porcelain programme from a list of nominated products.

And, to think that we thought people might only notice how interesting and creative the CENTURIES brochure was!
