It’s that time of year again, where list of trends for the coming year, “best of (fill in the blank)” and more seem to be everywhere. Well, the esteemed Esquire Magazine online published their “Best Restaurants of the Past Decade” the other day and we noticed something interesting. Nearly all the restaurants listed chose very distinctive dinnerware to showcase their food presentations to their guests.

You may argue with author Jeff Gordinier‘s selections (with help from a few work colleagues), but no matter – our theory still holds – that most distinctive restaurants also have distinctive dinnerware, glassware, flatware, and increasingly, other alternative serving pieces….adding to the visual appeal of each dish.

So, while anecdotal, this adds to our continuing idea that the tabletop you choose makes a measurable difference to a restaurant guest’s experience, along with the overall differentiating of a particular restaurant or hotel.

And, whether it is the dinnerware, the glassware, or the flatware…. it is not about the money spent on it…it’s much more about the thought that is put into selecting the items to reinforce that experience that the operators are aiming for their guests. Thoughtfulness to make certain that the tabletop articles the dining guest uses reinforces the values and ethos of the establishment rather than simply meeting an accountant’s idea of a reduced operating budget.

And, in today’s very visual and social media obsessed world, the need for distinctive looking menu dishes is even more critical to a restaurant’s overall appeal.

Yes, folks – it’s true. #TabletopMatters
