Elara Foodservice Disposables is bringing a new business model to the foodservice industry, one in which its product sales are directly tied to fighting hunger. Elara is a designer and producer of high quality food contact gloves, plastic cutlery and related products for restaurant and institutional foodservice operators. As a result of its business model, Elara has donated more than 100,000 meals to those in need(!) within a matter of months.

“One Case • One Meal” is Elara’s signature hunger relief program, providing meals in partnership with a local food bank to people struggling with hunger. For each case of Elara products purchased, Elara provides the cash equivalent of one meal to a food bank delivering meals to individuals at risk of going hungry. With no cap to the number of meal donations, Elara will strengthen its fight against hunger in direct alignment with everything it does as a business. This means that, as Elara customers, restaurants and other establishments serving food can continually help reduce hunger as well in their normal course of business.

At the upcoming National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show 2012 on May 5-8 at McCormick Place in Chicago (the largest restaurant industry event in the country), Elara will be extending the One Case • One Meal program to anyone visiting the Elara booth (#7852). As a special promotion at the NRA Show, Elara will donate a meal to someone in need for every attendee badge scanned. With 58,000 industry professionals expected to be in attendance, this represents a large opportunity for the foodservice community to make a difference.

“Dan Grinberg and Elara know how important it is to address the growing issue of hunger in our communities,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization. “Their generous support is not only heartwarming and welcome, but it also highlights Elara’s leadership position in showing how a for-profit business can incorporate an important philanthropic component within its business model.”

Forty-nine (49) million people in the United States are struggling with hunger, with 17 million children living in food insecure households. For a nation as wealthy as the U.S., this level of hunger is shocking. Through Elara’s unique business model and its One Case • One Meal hunger relief program, the foodservice industry can help reduce these numbers and make a positive impact.
